I'm guessing that you feel Lorie is somewhat handy with a wrench, or knows someone who is. These cars are cheap to run if that is the case.
Personally, I think the fuel pump is a lot easier than the coolant bypass valve. Just need the TOOL to get that ring off, and carefully remove the gas and return lines. The tool I made from the ring was the PVC joint, and it works great. My first fuel pump ring removal attempt bent some large pliers broke some of the ears off of ring, and ended up using a cold chisel and hammer to get it started. My next one, I had the tool made and ready to go. Worked great! Do it yourself, and you can replace with a good unit for $200-300.
I would advise picking up DIC cassette and know how to put it in in the dark. It is easy, and a miracle cure for the car. They do go bad. I've replaced 3 or 4 over 18yrs of driving DIC equipped Saabs, and it is nice to have a backup. You don't want to find out what the emergency replacement cost will be. Is Advance Auto still selling the Wells unit for under $200?
Enjoy your ride! These can be durable, safe, and above all fun cars to drive for the money.
