Sudden headgasket?

Went to do my maintenance run on the 2000 Aero and there's water in the oil. Lots of it, seemingly. All of a sudden, too.
I just had the oil pump o-ring go, which I replaced last week -- so in the 2 weeks before that I was checking the oil constantly and there was definitely nothing like this.
I'd had this once when I did PCV6 on a humid evening and the newly-closed system condensed but there wasn't much, it evaporated in fairly short order and never came back.
Oddly there's nothing in the coolant (I dropped it to do the water pump today, had not been losing coolant but the bearings were rough), no untowards pressure in the tank (yet). Not perceptibly burning coolant either. (I had a Jetta that did all 3 so I'm familiar with the bit.)
I did change the oil, hoping maybe one of the dozen generic quarts I dropped in while the o-ring was holed was adulterated somehow, or just condensation again. Alas, still persistently making latte.
Definitely a headgasket or should I throw a set of fresh head bolts at it and see what happens? I did retorque in 2005 and the VC gasket is probably due...
