oil warning light

heard a rhythmic clattering, then oil light went on.
stopped, let it cool down.
check level, very low, but I don't see any sign of a leak.
put in 3 qts. Cap cracked putting it back on.
Rigged cap with duct and ty-wraps, but that only held a couple miles and I was back to where I started. Still no sign of a leak.
If I get lucky and find a cap locally, easily, tmrw, before the nor'easter, am I likely to face the same issue after a few miles, or might I make it to the mechanic 14 miles away?
Broad strokes I know. Whats your spiddy sense tell you?
