2000 9-5 180K,
car has been driving fine recently with no complaints from its owner. Yesterday i removed the battery and replaced the transmission mount, put the car all back to together and no start, car just barely wanted to crank over. Jumped started it, car ran fine after about 10 minutes i turned it off and whaddya know, same no start acting like a dead battery. Today i jumped the car and drove it around for a bit then took it to autozone to have them test the alternator, they said it just barely failed putting out 13.4 volts. then i took the battery out and had them load test it and charge it and they said the battery is bad, cannot charge. The battery is a 2 year old interstate and alternator is most likely original.
Is it possible that this alternator has been failing for some time and has slowly murdered the battery? Is 13.4V that bad, i know its not ideal, but when driving around the battery light never comes on and it drives normal, making me think that the battery is bad.
Do you guys think that the problem is that the battery just decided to give up and alternator is still ok for a little while
Also does any of these shannneggins sound like a failing battery cable? Is there a good way to test that? When i put my crappy mutimeter on it from the alternator lug to the battery it reads .8 ohms resistance, which is the same reading i get if i press the two leads together, making me think it is fine.
