Any good parts store will do a charging system check, probably for free.
A couple years back my wife's 9-5 had its battery go. The batt was about 3 yrs old, from Walmart. At three years I didn't think it owed me much. It held a charge, but only for a few days. No light on the dash telling us it wasn't charging.
I put in a new battery at Advanced, and immediately got an alternator light on the dash. They had an alternator in stock so I bought it and put it in. No issues since.
The point is that you can have an alternator that is marginal but still won't set off a light. And you can have a weak battery, too. In my case I was probably premature in doing the batt, but it was November and I didn't want to get a call when I was traveling in January that the car was dead. So I did both.
