In real world practice you may need a light smear in the valve cover gasket groove just to hold the gasket in place when flipping the cover to seat it on the head.
Another trick is to tie the gasket in place using dental floss through the bolt holes. After the cover is in place you snip the floss and pull it out prior to inserting the bolts/screws.
