Frank -
What's the basis for your "long time to reach temperature"?
(1) CEL & code indicating that car isn't warming up properly?
(2) Dashboard temperature gauge not moving up, but no CEL?
(3) Insufficient cabin heat, no CEL, temp gauge looks to behave normally
If (1), then replace the thermostat and temperature sensor at same time.
If (2), try cleaning the temperature sensor contacts and reseating, or if its old, just replace it. Not too hard or expensive.
If (3), it gets trickier as that points to issues somewhere in the heating system. If you have heat, but its anemic, first try a self-calibration and see if you get any codes (lots of info on boards about this). That may help isolate any blend door issues that control the temperature of the treated air.
In my situation (2003 Arc - V6), a year ago, I had situation (3). My self-calibration yielded nothing, and the blend doors seemed to working properly. Hot coolant was getting to the heater core.
I ended up replacing the heater core. It was not much more difficult than replacing the cabin filter if you follow the WIS instruction.
Over time, the very thin tubing in the heater core can easily start to block up, so that by the time you need to replace it, coolant is only effectively passing through a small portion of the heater core's surface area.
Good luck
