I have not seen one yet that is not broken and dislodged when I take a fuel pump put.
I remove all of them and tell the customer why before even starting the job.
The pieces when moving around in there will jam the fuel level float arm once in a awhile making your fuel gauge act up.
When these cars were new and people cared and complained about a low sounding thud back and forth when coming to a stop, it was traced to the fuel sloshing back and forth in the tank (i hear it on mine at half tank).
But the solution was just another after-the-fact knee jerk reaction (like the PCV fixes) with poor implementation using a fold-able plastic that with age stiffens up and crack by the sloshing of fuel and constant movement of the plastic tank fabric.
