Subframe differences Posted by Bill B [Email] (#1884) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill B) on Wed, 12 Jul 2017 18:55:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The subframe on my 2001 base 2.3t, 163k miles, is out and on the driveway and next to the car, which is up on front jack stands. I also have a 1999 SE with 48k or so miles with the subframe out. The subframe is out because it was the only way I could remove the engine for rebuild. Turns out the engine had more damage than a spun bearing. I suspect it had been a sludge victim before I bought it. It had a bent crankshaft and damage to the block apparently from a broken #2 rod. I bought the 2001 in 2015 originally for the engine, but decided to keep it when Harman Kardon seduced me.
In the past two years the SE became a parts car when I decided not to go for a new engine. Now, I am planning to replace the subframe rather than dicker with changing bushings which appear to be ok. The AC compressor recently failed and I have a new replacement for that (and orifice and receiver/drier). I am planning to install the alternator and starter from the '99 as well as a new oil pressure sensor. The back motor mount on the '01 is trash and I am contemplating using the one from the '99 which appears good.
The '99 subframe has what looks like a torque arm and bracket to hold it at the back bottom of the subframe, a little to the left of the back motor mount and under approximately the pinion of the steering rack. There is nothing of the sort on the '01.
My question: are there any other differences between the subframes that might prevent use of the '99 subframe in the '01?
