Fix my Banana Remote 2 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by Mark in Marine [Email] (#1837) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mark in Marine) on Mon, 23 Apr 2018 06:13:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A thread on another board got me to thinking about re-syncing my nonfunctional banana remote. There was more wrong than that - I fixed it and I'm posting my fix here.
The banana remote for my 1999 SE failed, and it would not work even with new battery. Upon careful inspection, the 'clever' battery cage is both mechanical and electrical. It uses its 3 mechanical legs to power 3 different parts of the circuit board - but two of the three legs of this upper cage had broken off, though the solder joints were intact. So inserting the battery lifted the legs away from the board and broke electrical contact.
A 'new' remote would need reprogramming, and it might break the same way, so I decided to fix it. My solution was to run a piece of solid copper wire from leg to leg across the outside of the open end of the battery clip, bent to exact shape, and soldered at each end. I ran another short piece of solid copper wire soldered at the third leg and soldered to the other copper wire (in shape of a T). Now the battery cage is quite robust, and should not crack again in the car's lifetime. I used 4 presses of the Unlock button prescribed to re-sync with a new battery, and it worked! Choose your solid copper wire diameter small enough so you don't need to modify the case to make it fit.

P.S. I should be kind to the engineers who designed the battery cage. It lasted over 15 years before failure, which was probably beyond the design parameters.
