Today I replaced the original heater core on my 2000 v6 wagon . No visible signs of leakage , but it was filled with deposits and sand/silica when I flushed it out after removal . After 300,000 miles and almost 20 years the heater core has been acting like a coolant filter . Replaced it with a cheap spectra unit and fresh o-rings p/n 50 45 885.The Phillips screw holding the tube retainer was fussy upon removal , so I installed a M5 -0.8x20mm socket cap screw . The whole cooling system now is updated , as everything has been replaced within the last 10,000 miles . Pentofrost NF about 40/60 with distilled water .
I also replaced the cabin air filter , after 6 months / 10,000 miles . Is there a real world application for the foam insulation that sticks to the top of the filter ? It seems to be impossible to install , and seems to absorb moisture from the tubes .
Hope the results help keep the windshield cleaner inside the car . Thanks for the tips !
