2008 questions (kind of long)

This summer my 2002 Arc wagon got totaled. Got it back from the insurance hoping to repair it but after getting into it figured it wasn't worth it. After looking the rest of the summer and fall I just couldn't find anything I liked more so a few weeks ago I bought a 2008 wagon with the visibility package. Some questions:
1) The previous owner had the suspension redone a couple of years ago. But they used front control arms without the self leveling sensors. Said it doesn't make a difference and he's never gotten a message on the SID. I find this hard to believe. Wouldn't you have to make a TECH 2 adjustment to turn this off? The manual says if it finds an error it reverts the headlights down and displays a message.
2) Can't get the compass and auto dim to work on the rear view mirror. Is there something I'm missing?
Some general observations... overall I like my 2002 better with the exception of the SID. It just seemed more solid. There are so many plastic parts broken in the 2008. I am getting used to the 4 cylinder vs V6. The 2008 did come with roof cross bars which I'm thinking of taking off because of the wind noise. The 17 inch tires also take a little getting used to.
