Hi guys,
A few weeks back I posted about a slow start issue on my wife's '03 wagon. People here suggested a corroded battery cable, the ground at the starter, a bad FPR.
I talked with techs at my indy at some length and they first thought the fuel pump could be losing its prime, something they had seen before. But my FP was only about 50K miles old.
Turns out it was the starter. The Mitsubishi starter has a problem in that the bearing supporting the shaft inside the starter fails causing the shaft to move around and the starter doesn't engage correctly. It can seem, as I had noted, like a weak battery, because the starter essentially jams. It sure acted like that when it was 5 degrees F here late week, although it jumped OK with a full pop of juice.
The owner of the shop had coincidentally had the same problem a few weeks earlier on his wife's 9-5, so he knew right away what the problem was. A reman starter did the trick and the car starts like new. He also pressure tested my FP and FPR and they were good.
SO... if your 9-5 has weak starting, the starter may be the problem.
