Interesting and entertaining post-Thanksgiving reading. We all have key stories to tell.
It looks like you did everything right, except the key laundering.
As a sailor, I'm on guard against getting my keyring, with keys to two SAABs, soaked in fog, rain or saltwater. May I suggest as an added precaution that you trace the junction of the key body "door" and the body itself with a continuous smear of silicone. As I recall there is a O- ring too which should be slathered as well. The intent it to block ingress of moisture with the grease. I've not tested this in the washing machine, but to date, it seems to have prevented water intrusion inside of the key body. I renew the silicon at each battery change. I get my silicon at a local SCUBA dive shop.
