Because of the continued leak, I pulled apart all but the core itself to check as suggested. It all looked tight.
Ran it for quite a while while with the glove box etc out as suggested so as to check for leaks. It all seemed tight as it ran.
Certainly no leaks around the core or o-ring, and now, after driving more and waiting to see the leak.... there is none!
Therefore all I can guess is that the coolant I saw after the change-over was remnant from previous, despite a lot of trips around town that I did.
The thing I took notice of this second time in there is that the previously leaked (old) coolant was not just on the carpet under the o-ring position but had also gathered at the lowest point on the lower of the two metal tubes to the firewall. It was right under and as if it had collected from the lowest bolt on that large black plastic housing (heater/AC unit?). Does not look as if it had come from above at the firewall by the way, but who can tell?
Anyway, apart from the less efficient heater now than previous (Nissens core) I think I can now report a successful core transplant and a false alarm afterwards. Thanks to the Saabologists board for the help, "pme" and "bobc" particularly.
