Hello,
I would agree with Anders that a compression test is for the most part for differences between the cylinders. The gauge can differ and the method of testing can differ. I was taught many years ago that you wanted 4 or 5 compressions for the test. But for instance, Porsche people want the numbers for 8 or 9 compressions, especially for a pre-purchase inspection.
On the other hand if you were experience a running issue and ended up with high compression numbers there would be a chance of the cam timing be off. For instance I remember years ago a v-6 9-5 that when doing a compression test 3 cylinders were way different from the other 3 cylinders. And in that instance of the cams had jumped a few teeth on the belt and caused it. But the result of the compression test had shown that 3 on one bank all were close and the 3 on the other bank were all higher but close to one another. Good Luck, Bernie
