The voltage drop test bob mentions (measure the voltage at battery and at alternator) should also be done under load - see attached video.
If you don’t apply load when testing you may get a false response showing a good cable. Given age of your car and experience of many members, it’s likely your cable is corroded internally. Replacing the cable on my car a number of years back completely rejuvenated the car.
