Most car companies are trying just to pass one crash test -- the head on collision. Many companies have done better than Saab in recent crash tests but still haven't done narly as well in real world statistics. BMW is a good exam[le. For several years now the 5 and 3 series have done well in crash testing yet they are still only geting scores of 75 or so (above average but not substantially above average). The reason it seems to me is that their safety program is not comprehensive involving all types of crashes. The number one killer on the highway now is rollover and there is no crashtesting for this event. Side impacts are the third major cause of death. So when you only test for frontal collisions, you don't get a real good pictyre of the overall safety of the car. Moreover, these tests are only indicative of how you would do if you ran into the same car or a very similar car in size and weight. They are useless predictors if you are hit by a much larger car.
You are right about some Toyota cars. The Lexus 400 has the same real world score of 55 as the 9-5. It weighs 400 lbs more though. Some cars are heading in the wrong direction so I am skeptical of how many manufacturers are taking safety seriously.
