waxing question

Should I have my car waxed before winter? Will that help protect the finish? I never waxed my last car and it looked pretty bad as time went by - I want to take better care of my new Saab. How much should I expect it to cost (no, I'm not gonna do it myself, as I'll mess it up)? My car has to be outside in the winter. Thanks all.
