Modern engines use no fuel when driving down hill in gear. The electronic fuel injection stops the fuel supply, when engine braking, above a certain RPM level, which I think is about 1400 RPM in my 2000 Aero.
The best fuel milage I ever saw on my SID came once after refilling, I was coasting down a hill in gear when I reset the display and got a reading of 99.9 MPG. So do not take it out of gear when going down hill, you will save on both brakes and fuel by leaving it in gear.
