Front Suspension Problem? (long)

I have had various noises from my front suspension over the last 12 months or so. (I have an '01 SE and love the car). I would at times get a popping or thumping on acceleration, hard braking, etc., all of which seemed to be resolved by the dealer tightening everything up. However, I started to hear a very pronounced thump when turning sharply in and out of parking spaces, especially when backing up. So, the dealer replaced the front wheel barings, which has helped some, BUT the problem persists, particularly when I am slowing down to begin to turn into a parking lot for example. It does not happen each time, but, I hear it once a day as I do a lot of city driving with low speed turning. It sounds like the front suspension is resetting/realigning itself or something. One of the higher ups in the dealership told me he has the same problem on his Aero wagon when backing up parallel parking and said it was normal. HOWEVER, I can't imagine that regularly hearing this kind of noise in a car of this classs (or any other) is normal. Is this the suspension or do I have an engine mount or transmission problem? I don't hear anything unless the car is moving. Turning the wheel fom lock to lock when the car is stopped produces no abnormal noise.
Thank you.....
