The very first generation red DI cassettes installed in 90-92 gave plenty of forwarning before it made the car undriveable.
This is the cassette where the wire harness was moulded into the cassette.
I have probably replace 20-30 of those old ones, non of them came in on a towtruck, but was drivaable in more or less good shape.
Several of those failures was caught by me testdriving the car, before the customer even had notice anything.
They all started to misfire under heavy load, and the misfire symptoms slowly crept lower and lower on the load range band to the point where the customer started to feel it too and brought the car in for fix.
And all these cars had 60K and more on the odometer.
So by refining and retuning this intricate part, they have created a problem where the car stops dead in it's tracks and at random mileage going from som 5K up to 100K.
With almost a guaranteed failure before 100K.
We have a couple of customers that still chuggs along with the first generation DI cassette on their 9K, well past 100K.
