the newer water cooled turbos are more robust... in the old days ('80s) instructions for driving a SAAB contained warnings of turning off the engine without allowing the turbine to coast down to an idle speed... i.e., a sudden drop of oil pressure wears out bearings and thus lowers the life of the unit... these days you don't have to be so vigilant but it's a good idea to never just kill the engine after hard driving... wait a minute or two, you'll thank yourself later.
