That's the way I like to think. Nobody, I mean nobody has Saab's passion for safety. My daughter walked away from a head on collision in her 9-3 last spring that killed the drunk driver that hit her. Both cars were doing about 65 mph. It was dark and the drunk driver didn't even have headlights on and was headed north in the south bound lanes of traffic. My daughter didn't even get her foot to the brake; she steered just enough to have an offset collision. The car she hit was smaller, a Dahatsu Chirade and it was demolished; the front wheel was under the driver's seat. There was litttle intrusion into the Saab and my daughter only ended up with a sprained foot.
According to the government's auto fatality website, in 2001 the average number of deaths per 100,000 cars was 18.5. There were approximately 110,000 99-02 Saabs on the road in the US that year and only 3 deaths in those Saabs. No other manufacturers in the weight class of Saabs can match this figure. Six times less deadly than the average vehicle.
IIHS bears this out in injury stats. One hundred represents the average car. The lower the number the better. The latest stats are 53 for the 9-5 and 58 for the 9-3. Both rate substantilly safer than average. Both the 3 series and 5 series rate in the mid 70's. That's why I say a BMW is no Saab. It's what you don't see in a Saab that makes this car worth the money and the occasional aggravation.
Yes, you get really good performance, utility, value, and class in a Saab. But what you really get is safety that is unmatched by other cars in their size, weight and price class.
