Simon,
I have a 02 Aero bought new in Aug. last year... I travel alot thus only have 6,500 miles on it now... usually take a cab to the airport and leave the car in my garage... however, last week I took it to the airport. The wind was very strong for the 3 days it was there and temps dipped to the single digits.. When I returned, temperatures were sub zero (F)... the car turned over a bit slow.. and once it caught, there was a LOUD BAM/CLUNK and I noticed the gear selector shook at the same time... I was bent over the drivers seat attempting to start inorder to allow it some warm up time while I loaded my luggage... now from that perspective, I beleive the CLUNK originated from the transmission... this concerns me... it may be that the severe cold is causing transmission components to stick together.. either way.. I am reporting this to my dealer and I will advise....
