you use the clay bar correctly. Use lots of lubricant (soapy water or better yet, detailing spray). The clay should not touch the surface of the paint - it skims across on a film of water to pick up the contaminants. If the area is too dry, the clay will drag and leave bits of clay stuck to the paint surface. It's very easy to tell if you are doing it right.
