At that time (August, 2001), I looked at the V70 T-5 and the 2.4T, comparing them to the 9-5 Aero Wagon. I found that I fit in the Volvo driver's seat better than the Saab, but that the 9-5 was much more car. There were other considerations as well...
No manual transmission was available from Volvo late in the model year
Volvo dealers were not bargining aggressively like Saab dealers
$5,000 lease incentive from Saab (net was $5K below invoice)
Aero has better suspension/handling
Power: 2.4T had better torque during normal driving than T-5
T-5 had better high-end than the 2.4T
Aero was better in both areas!
Saab came with 3yr/36K scheduled maintenance, Volvo did not at the time
I had come out of a Volvo 850 and had been very happy with it for 8 years & 185K miles, but the Aero seduced me then and I still love getting to drive it after 19 months and 43K miles.
The safety issue is probably a toss-up between them, except for the 3rd row seat in the Volvo's rear crumple zone.
You can probably be happy & safe in either wagon, but I would bet you would be happier in the Saab.
Good luck
Keith Porter
