I reset mine only on each fill up and then compare against actual. The SID is fairly accurate - usually within 0.2 of actual.
When you have driven few miles on the SID, the relative variations can cause wierd, but true results. So if you cleared it 30 miles ago and pull into a 7-11 and leave the car running for a while, the SID would record single digit MPG. Similary, if you only have 30 miles on it and coast downhill, you might show fantastic MPG. You really need a lot of miles on it to get a good reading.
