I think using the 17" wheels with chains (even the cable type) is out. At least not recommened as required clearances are not meet. The spider spikes might allow a little closer tolerance for clearance but looking at them I don't like latter style design and would prefer SCC's Z-chain or Sure Grip Z personally. Regardless the 17" isn't going to be a good snow setup anyway. Also 15" wheels are also out too. On the Aero (unlike other 9-5 cars) the 15" wheels won't fit due to the brakes.
So given your requirements and preferences I would say keep the 17" for the non-ski season with high performance summer tires. Get 16" with a good compromise tire geared toward winter use. If pure performance snow tires don't make sense maybe something like the Nokian WR. This is marketed as a "four season" tire but it has a severe winter service condition rating (gets that government "snow flake" rating symbol). The four season snow tire concept sounds sort of flaky to me (pun wasn't intended) but your unusual mix of driving would seem to make it well suited for you. A number of people on these boards swear by them.
I had the Nokian NRW which was sort of the ealier version (originally sold as a Winter tire and later marketed as an "All Season Plus" tire). This was a decent tire on dry and snow. The WR is supposed to be even better.
Regardless let people know what you decide and how it works out if you don't mind.
