Dual zone climate control working? Advice needed.

My dual zone temp control is pretty feeble. I have tried cranking up or down one side vs the other to see the difference and I can only detect very very minor differences. As I played with the controls, it seemed to adjust the fan speed - but for both the passenger & driver.
To be honest, I thought nothing of it till recently. The dual zone controls didn't work any better in my prior car either (buick regal) so I just chalked this up to a marketing gimmik. But this week, my wife's car is in the body shop (hit by a UPS truck - ouch!) and she rented a Chrysler mini-van. I drove the rental mini-van the other day and that car's dual temp control really works!
It was an eye-opener. I could get REALLY COLD air on my side, and it blew REALLY HOT air on the passenger side. This is the way it should work! I never knew dual zone could be so markedly different.
So now I am thinking about my 9-5 again. Maybe mine doesn't work and I need to take it in for service. Maybe Saab's dual controls just don't work well (compared to Chrysler - ugh). Let me know what you think
