I have both a 9-5 SE V6 and a BMW 540iA. Both have been reliable and I enjoy both - they are very different driving experiences. The BMW has fewer amenities than the Saab, a weaker sound system, less room and a $14k higher sticker. A direct comparison is perhaps unfair due to the price difference, but if I had to choose just one as my daily driver, I'd take the BMW hands down for the following reasons: the V8 is way more refined and quicker than any Saab I've ever driven (and that includes Aeros and Viggens), it handles better, rides better and stops better. For the price difference, it should! Actually, I'd would not normally spend the huge extra bucks on the 540, but I got a great deal and did not refuse.
The new 5 series does not appeal to me and the price difference to Saab is even greater. Fact is, Saab - especially with the great deals being offered - is a wonderful value. But, don't sell BMW short, it is a great drivers car, but unless they revamp their current styling trend, my E39 540 will be my last one!
