I recently leased a '01 9-5 Wagon, black. When it came time for its first bath I was the definition of diligent preparation and method. I searched the forum for tips on washing and read FAQs on different sites. I first rinsed the car down, gently using a boar's hair brush to loosen the dirt. I then soaped it down using the mitt. After rinsing I toweled it off with 100% cotton towels. Despite all this I managed to put a healthy scratch in the hood. Even worse the scrach is right in front of the driver's seat, a daily reminder of my incompetance.
The part that is particularly aggravating is that this is by far the most attention I've ever paid to a car when washing it. The questions I have are where did I go wrong and what do I do about the scratch. The towels I used were 100% cotton. I used two towels, one for each half of the car and worked from the top down. Should I have used more towels? What type of pressure should I have used to wipe up the water?
As for the scratch, it appears to be in the clearcoat only. Any recommendations?
Finally, please feel free to share your washing horror stories. I don't want to feel like the only buffoon whose car was in worse condition after he washed it.
