Have both in my family. I drive a '02 Aero wagon; my mother drives an '02 V70XC. My other half drives an '04 V70XC. Certainly the predicate is that one is AWD and set-up for that (stance, tires, etc.); one is much more of a driver's car.
The Volvo is big...while it actually is slighlty smaller than my Aero wagon, it seems much larger. The car lumbers, it's more difficult to park, much less nimble. It's a great highway cruiser. The Aero? Quite the opposite, and it too is a great highway cruiser. I think the Volvo is a perfect car for my 70 year-old mother. She likes its substance overall, and certainly isn't concerned about its cornering abilities. I'm glad she's in it. She had the former XC and also a 940 wagon prior, so Volvo suits her. But if you want a driving experience, choose the Saab. I've also driven the FWD V70 and would say much of the same thing. My other half likes the Volvo as well, but frankly misses the '98 V90 that was totaled in an accident two months ago for which the '04 XC serves as a replacement. It handled better... and that's a statement, since the platform of the V90 is ancient -- '98 was it's last year.
Also, the maintenance on the V70XC has been fine -- nothing out of the ordinary; same with my Aero wagon. I believe it's a wash frankly. They're both European cars, they both will be pricey to fix at times, or perhaps not.
Stick with Saab. Volvo makes a fine car, but the Saab is much more of a driver.
Good luck!
