Thanks to all for the good advice on my post of about 6 weeks ago.
The clutch on my 2000 9-5 Gary Fisher sport wagon was screeching intermittently. Sounded a lot like a power steering screech. Dealer told me they would warranty it if not worn out or abused, but if it was worn/abused, I would have to pay the whole tab. On all of your advice, I took a chance.
On the 41,000 mile clutch, they found only 30% wear, so they warrantied it.
They did keep the car for almost two weeks while they ordered parts and whatnot (and also replaced the turbo due to blue smoke at startup), but gave me an '04 9-3 to drive (free!) in the meantime. I enjoyed that! When I went to pick up the car it was making a new screech, this time from the starter motor, which had previously been fine. Don't know how the mechanic missed that while driving it back on the lot or during the test drive! So left the car another few days and got it back in reasonable working order.
I notice on the repair order that they only "cleaned" the flywheel rather than re-surfacing it. It seems to me that after putting about 8 hours of labor into a clutch, they would spend $80 to resurface the flywheel. They said that it didn't need it. Does anyone know if I should be concerned about this? Any chance it could start chattering later? Also, anyone know what could have happened to the starter during the clutch job? Or maybe it was a co-incidence?
