I think the consensus here is no, just a simple switch. That's all I did anyway. If you check the label on Mobil 1 (since I am familiar with that brand) it says "fully compatible with all oils" or some such language. The synth will, over time, remove sludges that may have built up in your engine, so if you wanted to you could change the filter halfway thru the first change to keep things flowing. Most people seem to change with full synth every 5,000 miles, to mimic the "extreme" driving conditions Saab lists in the manual. I use Saab OEM filters, but I've just ended my warranty period for both my Saabs, so I think I'll switch to the Puralator filter that has gotten good reviews here.
