Very simple and cheap for the inside mirror (outside mirrors started as an option recently and really require major wiring for an aftermarket install). You buy the mirror + wiring harness (if your dealer is selling the option package, then it's all bundled, plus you are likely to get a couple of other small bits like connectors and wire holders). Make sure this is the right harness for your model year - I recently installed a 2004 mirror in a M98 and surprisigly the plug on the harness did not fit, therefore I had to hardwire it.
You remove the plastic cover on the roof (gently pry out the lamp glass and remove the screw, then pull the plastic down). Then unscrew the old mirror, screw in the new one. The electrical connections are i) ground, ii) +12V iii) reverse gear engaged. I don't have the wiring diagram in front of me but you can either obtain it from the dealer, or it will be part of the bundle, or let me know and I'll look for it at home.
If you had the mirror installed at the factory, your rear-view mirror antidazzle function would be switched off automatically if you engaged Reverse. Official aftermarket istallations do not provide for this, so to switch off this function you would need to use the switch on the mirror or run a wire down to the connector by the driver's door where the wiring for the reverse light is.
Installed two myself - 30 minute job, excluding the reverse light.
Cheers
Yury
