The obvious alternative is a Volvo V70, but you have to special order the manual trans ones. Want to try one before you buy? - tough luck. Volvos are also a bit more expensive and less reliable.
Another obvious and excellent choice is the subaru legacy GT, the only downside is that subaru doesnt consider itself a premium marque, so the warranty is only comparable with other mainstream cars at 3/36 with no free maintainance and the dealers might be a bit grungier and light on loaner cars and free car washes - there is however a hefty saving to compensate you. Saab could do a lot worse than making the next 9-5 a gussied up legacy with a more premium interior and warranty for a bit more.
A final less obvious option is a mazda 6 wagon. Same caveats as the subaru, but even better value if you can live with fwd and 'only' 220hp. Despite mazda being a humdrum brand in the past the 6 is a sparklingly good car that merits consideration with 'premium' rivals.
