Given the driver knows how to drive a stick I couldn't disagree more. I've driven both and the paddle shifter is lame, it still tries to give you a smooth shift over performance. I would have no problem beating someone in an auto if you're talking the same car.
The safety aspect it more of an in tune feeling with the car, it's almost an extension of you if driven properly. I like to be able to put the car in whatever gear I want at any given time.
