Winter tires or all-seasons?

Our '01 9-5 wagon has a set of Continental ContiExtreme all-seasons which are wearing down. While they're fine in wet and dry, I doubt there's enough tread depth to handle the winter snow.
I just put a set of Nokian WR's all-seasons on our Subaru wagon. The same tires in the 215/55-16 size for the Saab are $159 each locally. Ouch. For that price I could instead invest in a set of (narrower? smaller?) steel wheels and put on a set of snow tires. I'm a little worried about the local pot holes and frost heaves beating up the alloy wheels this winter. I was considering a snow tire like the Dunlop Winter Sport M3's - around Boston the conditions are less deep snow and more frequently slush, iciness, and lighter snowfall.
