Certainly Louis is right a direct XM unit is very clear. I've listened to a modulated unit and it can be quite clear.
Here is one suggestion though about installing the unit. The radio pulls out of the dash and the wires remain, attached to a basket that holds the radio. The car antenna lead (you'll need a European adaptor) also attaches to the basket. It can wiggle loose causing poor reception. Instead of attaching the antenna lead to the basket, pull the basket out of the dash as well. Thread the antenna lead through the basket and firmly plug it into the back of the radio head. Slide the radio back into the basket, then push both back into the dash.
This should make a difference. I wouldn't give up my XM for anything.
