Most people start with a tweak of the APC - either opening it up and DIY, or upgrading to an aftermarket APC (see companies below.)

After that, the usual mods seem to be fuel system and ignition system. A 2.8 bar, 3.0 bar, or RR fuel pressure regulator will allow you to boost higher w/o encountering knock.

Ignition upgrades include things like SPG9's AID module. I am not very familiar with ignition upgrades, but several on this board are.

Along the way, other things may be upgraded - a freer flowing exhaust, etc. Common sources for upgrading include Sweedish Dynamics (http://www.saabperformanceparts.com) and SPG9 (http://www.spg9.com).

Very Important: before you begin upgrading your car, make sure it is in tip-top shape. Check the plugs, cap, and rotor. Check al the fluids - engine oil, tranny fluid, coolant, etc. Make sure everything works well - brakes, shifting, etc. Also check all the rubber under your hood - belts, hoses, etc. It is really nerve-wrecking to be test driving your new upgrade and have a vacuum line pop off, causing your car to operate like it is on it's last legs! I'd say vacuum hoses are pretty important - I'd even recommend pulling off all the rubber hoses on your engine and replacing them with silicone lines, if it hasn't already been done.

Things you'll need are pretty simple - basic tools for working on your car, a boost vacuum/pressure gauge comes in handy. A simple multimeter and soldering tools come in handy if you are modding your own APC.

Good luck, and ask if you have any specific questions - there are tons of people on this baord who know tons about upgrading these amazing cars!
