I also have a new to me 90 900S, and same problem. Via the wonder of the Bentley manual, I found the location of this switch. I always start however at the non-working gadget & work backwords, so I pulled the taillight covers & check for voltage in reverse, finding none.
Went next to the reverse switch, located on the driver side of the shifter down in the metal framework. You must remove the entire console cover which requires the torqx bits; start by pulling up the rubber shifter boot and find the 2 screws under there. I think this got the first primary cover off but seem to remember a second one down over the ignition switch. This one took more work but again Torqx bits do the trick & you must pull it off the seat belt latch assy's. Now when both covers are off you see the switch sticking out of the shifter metal housing. On my car I removed the switch & checked it for continuity & it was working! Also with car on it had voltage. Looked into the hole and when you put the car in reverse a metal rod moves adjacent to the hole & depresses the switch. On my 90 this rod is worn to the point it would not push the switch far enough to make! Luckily the switch had a very thick washer under it, maybe 1.5 to 2 mm thick which I removed. I also then put a good blob of grease thru the hole onto the metal rod, screwed in the switch, & SHAZAM the backup lights work (and also front backup lights on each side - COOL !
This fixed mine and hopefully the rod wore away due to no lube and will remain with me for some time.
Hope this helps! The more I work on this car, the more I LOVE IT :o)
