Dave has a point here. Original SAAB keys are steel and duplicates are brass. This is because steel keys dull $360 carbide cutters in about two copies. However, the pins in the lock are brass and a steel key will wear them excessively. That is why any old SAAB key will open a lot of cars. The pins are totally worn out from the steel keys. This will happen with brass keys too but it takes longer. A good quality brass key will serve you fine. You shouldn't have to use a lot of force on the key to operate the lock. If you do something is wrong. We used to get a lot of SAABS in because brass and sometimes even steel keys would break in the ignition. This is because it is in the floor and dirt and crap and coffee falls in it. This would make the lock hard to turn and so the keys would fatigue from flexing and eventually break. That is about the worst possible place for an ignition lock. Also they are a major pain to replace. Our locksmith manual actually says to refer the job to your biggest competitor and tell the customer they are experts on the job. This is a nice way of ramming one up their back door since they will hate you for sending them a SAAB. We always sent people to the dealer for this one. I swore I would never own one of those stupid cars for that reason alone. Well I am eating my words since I bought an '85 900T and love it. However, I couldn't start the car when I first bought it because I had a mental block against putting that much pressure on the key. I hosed the ignition lock out good with WD-40 and then lubed it with some lockease graphited fluid and it works fine now. PLEASE keep your ignition lock well cared for. It will save you heartache in the long run.
Yet I still use my original steel SAAB key and keep the copy as a spare.
