2nd gear cold crunch troubleshooting, A-Z? (long)

Thanks (I'm sure not just from me) for all the posts with ideas on how best to alleviate (if not totally remedy) the infamous 2nd gear crunch in cold weather. I've done my best to alleviate it via shifting habits, now want to try the rest. i.e. a systematic troubleshooting procedure (assuming anything can be done to improve things). I'm sure lots of us would really appreciate whoever wants to take a stab at it.
PS: My own conditions are:
1) '91 spg 5-speed with low miles (probably not crunch-free miles from prev. owners)
2) 2 oil changes using Saab synthetic (the stuff used in NG900's I think)
3) Tranny shifted fine all summer. Now that's it's cold (20-40 def F.), 2nd gear gets temperamental, sometimes just catching a few teeth. I pause mid-shift & sometimes double-clutch or sometimes move extreme right in mid-shift, all with varying success, or sometimes just skip 2nd. The rest of the gears shift like butter, even cold.
Is this synchro wear, oil-related, temp. related, fork wear, external boot wear or linkage adjustment, or some of everything plus some other things thrown in for good measure?
Ready & willing to follow any troubleshooting list that's kind enough to posted. Thanks in advance.
