Clay,
Armed with a Bentley manual, a few tools and an assistant, you should be able to pull the plastic clutch cover and see if the problem lies in the clutch. Recently, on my '86 900 Turbo, the clutch developed a terrible crunching/grinding sound while functioning intermittently. The problem turned out to be the clutch disc had lost one of the springs, which got broken into pieces.
Of course, I had done model 99 clutches before, so I wasn't afraid to do a 900 clutch (which is even easier). Bottom line is that the 900 clutch is probably the EASIEST clutch to do in ANY automobile! Approximately $200-$250 will buy all the SAAB pieces and re-surface the flywheel. Give yourself one day to carefully dis-assemble the car and bring the flywheel to a machine shop. A second day to re-assemble carefully, and you will have the satisfaction of learning how to do some mechaniccing on your car while saving a couple hundred dollars. I remember your earlier postings about being a teenage SAAB owner, so lay up a couple of six-packs of soft drinks for the process!
