The main pulley is of the harmonic balancer type, which means there is a core of rubber sandwiched between the inner and outer metal parts. The rubber goes bad with age, faster on SAABs, perhaps, because of proximity to hot exhaust pipes, and this allows the outer metal ring of pulleys to slip on the rubber, producing the screeeeeeeeeech. Most experienced folks say be sure to replace the seals and o-rings on the oil pump while you're in there, and be sure you know how to prime the oil pump before reassembling -- you might want to review the many posts about harmonic balancers in the archives in this regard.
To verify that this is the problem, get the front of your car up on ramps or jackstands and mark the inner and outer parts of the pulley (White-out, chalk, or whatever) and then check whether the marks have moved in relation to one another after the next big screeeeeeeeeeeech.
