Rear window defroster (convertible)

It simply does not work. I tried a new switch but it didn't change anything. The dash light still turns on when I push the switch in. How should I go about testing for continuity so that I could pinpoint the problem? What are the usual problems that occur? Is it possible to test for continuity on the heating element on the window itself? I ask because I was told that I will have to replace the rear window. I really don't beleive that. Could some damage occur when haveing the canvas replaced. I can't really remember if the defroster ever worked because I didn't really use it before I got the top replaced last March. Thanks to every one that helps. It's greaty appreciated.
Pedro
