On my '88 SPG, the seats had that old style adjustment that I mentioned.
On the '89 SPG, the seats are fastened to the floor with 4 torx bolts and the height adjustment is done with a lever with a telescoping handle on the left side (US spec, of course.) The '89 has the seat back release on the side of the seat back while the '88 had it on the bottom of the seat back (it took me 6 months to train myself to go for the lever on the side when I got the '89 :-)
Of course, the only reason that I think that post-'89 had the new style seat mounting is the '92 900S that I almost bought had the same height adjustment as my '89.
I can't say for sure, but it may be possible to unbolt the seat bottom from the track for any year and screw it to the track for an '85. This is pure guess, so it may not work.
