I contacted Mobil Oil company a few weeks ago reguarding the first oil changes for our VW's. Here are the questions I asked them.
Question 1) VW reccomends a 5W40 motor oil. If I cant find 5W40 oil will a 5W30 oil give me the same amount of protection my engine needs as a 5W40 oil?
Mobil's answer:
"We recommend that you follow the engine manufacturers recommendations as indicated in your owners manual. For maximum low-temperature performance and maximum fuel economy, use the lightest recommended oil viscosity(5W30 oppose to 5W40). Heavier oils can impede engine starting, lower fuel economy and steal horsepower. A 5W30 oil is safe for your VR6 all year around and will provide the same amount of protection as a 5W40.
Question 2) Do the VW's come factory fill with 5w40 motor oil? If so is it synthetic?
Mobil's answer:
"You would have to contact your manufacturer."
Question 3) Is it still a good idea to do an oilchange very early in an engines life to
remove all metal fileings during breakin? In vehicles in the past, I always changed the oil during the first 1000kms.
Mobil's answer:
"Mobil does think it is a good idea to change your first oil change at about 1,000-1,500 miles to remove any metal shavings that may be in the engine from the factory build."
Question 4) If the VW's are factory filled with non synthetic oil, when would be the
best time to switch to synthetic? I understand that breakin should be done
with regular oil...Fact or myth?
How about "break in oils"?
Mobil's answer:
"You can start using Mobil 1 in new vehicles at any time. In fact, Mobil 1 is the factory fill in Corvette LS1, LT-1 and LT-5 engines. And Mobil and Porsche just announced a new partnership that will also have all Porsche cars manufactured at the Zuffenhausen plant lubricated with Mobil 1. One of the myths that persists about Mobil 1 is that
new engines require a break-in period with
conventional oil. Current engine manufacturing technology does not require this break-in period. As the decisions by the engineers who design the Corvette and Porsche engines indicate, Mobil 1 can
be used in an engine from the day you drive the car off the show room floor. As for "break in oils" a complete myth. These days manufacturers are filling at the factory with regular or synthetic oils. The exact same oils you can buy right off the shelf."

I hope you guys/gals find this interesting. I did. Im changing my oil right away when I hit 1600km/1000miles.
