OK, I had a heat problem. No heat at idle. it was fine as long as I was cruising. I took out the bypass. It is not a valve, but a bypass route. When the heater core is at a higher resistance than the open bypass, (it is just a connection between the supply and return for the heater core) fluid flows through the bypass at a higher rate than the heater core. I assume with age, this bypass will be the easiest path at low flow rates (idle). I blocked the connection with a pen cap temporarily, and now I have heat. I will be ordering heater hoses off an 89 or earlier without the bypass and getting rid of it. This is also on the townsend site.
